Villa Grove, elevation of 7,986 feet (2,436 meters), is located in Saguache County, Colorado. The town sits at the bottom of Poncha Pass. Known as the northern gateway to the San Luis Valley, this hamlet has several massive peaks around it in all directions; especially to its east. The town was founded by Civil War veterans in 1863. At first named Garibaldi (for Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi), and was established by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1870. The town’s name was changed to the less political Villa Grove, on January 19, 1872. It served as the southern terminus of the Rio Grande’s narrow-gauge Poncha Pass line from 1870 to 1890. Today, this sleepy village is known as an art town with an estimated population of about 220 to 230 residents .
