About Poncha Pass

Poncha Pass is a mountain pass in South-Central Colorado with an elevation of 9,010 feet; 2,750 meters. It lies between the San Luis Valley to the south and the valley of the Arkansas River to the north. It’s where the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (to the east) and the San Juan Mountains (to the west) meet. U.S. Highway 285 runs over the pass. The pass has a mild approach on its southern side, but a more moderate 5% grade approach from the north. The Pass lies on the border between Chaffee County and Saguache County, and on the border between the San Isabel National Forest and the Rio Grande National Forest.

The climate on Poncha Pass features a high-altitude mountain climate, characterized by cold nights year round, with significant windy conditions, and high variability. Winters are cold with snow; sometimes with big winter storms hitting the area. Sometimes in winter on Highway 285, blowing snow can cause spots of snow-packed roads even on sunny days. On summer days, conditions are on average mild, often with afternoon showers and thunderstorms. There are several wonderful hiking trails off of the different mountain dirt roads off Poncha Pass; just be ready for all kinds of sudden weather changes while hiking on them - even in the summer months!

The drive to the summit from the north, via Poncha Springs, follows Poncha Creek through a valley of cottonwood trees and a pinion pine forest. Near the top, the road veers away from the creek up to the saddle that separates the Arkansas River Valley and the San Luis Valley. This is also the dividing line between the Arkansas River watershed and the Rio Grande watershed. From the very top of Poncha Pass, you’ll get an amazing view of the northern end of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountain range (it’s a shame that the CDOT cams shown on this page, today no longer show the fantastic view). But it’s a very cool ride to take on 285 to see it live. While the paved road is safe enough, just make sure your vehicle is gassed up and well tuned for high mountain driving before you leave (as is the case for all of Colorado’s mountain pass roads). But do keep in mind, that as of 2026, there’s still a big gap of places to gas up at between Poncha Springs and the town of Saguache (about 40 miles apart, if you stay on 285); but if you’re heading south at the Highway 17 interchange located at the bottom of the pass, the gap between gas stops is 55 miles from Poncha Springs to Hooper, Colorado, where the next gas pumps are located on this route.
