About Cuchara
The region gets its name from the spoon-like shape of the valley, with “cuchara” being the Spanish word for “spoon.”. Cuchara affords splendid views of dramatic West Spanish Peak, one of two monoliths once used as guideposts for traveling American Native Americans and early pioneers. The town of Cuchara is a charming, mountain village tucked away on the scenic Highway of Legends. It is located near a former ski resort in the mountains south of the town of La Veta. State Highway 12 travels through Cuchara as it approaches Trinidad to the southeast. Cuchara Valley features an alpine-like mountain climate with mild, pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. Situated at an elevation of roughly 8,500 feet in the Spanish Peaks region, it experiences an average of over 300 days of sunshine, low humidity, and significant day-to-night temperature drops.
